Despite falling to a fifth straight defeat in the Championship, their sixth in all competitions this season, Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth was full of praise for his players after their home loss against Millwall.

The Lions came back from 1-0 down to beat Wycombe 2-1 at Adams Park, but the boss was impressed with Josh Knight and Anis Mehmeti who made their debuts in the defeat.

Mehmeti, who signed as a free transfer following his release from Norwich, became the first player to represent the club in the first-team who was born this century.

Knight joined the club from Leicester on loan deal until January.

Ainsworth said: “I thought Josh Knight was really good, very accomplished and he is making the step up to the Championship.

“Leicester have got a good player on their hands, and hopefully we’ll be able to embed him in like we have done with other players in the past.”

On Mehmeti, he said: “Anis is a young boy who we took on trial for the B team and he has been outstanding in training.

“When we got promoted, we started this team and he is one that has come through and made it to the first team, which is outstanding.

“But it is tough – he’s not going to come in and play every week in the Championship as we will use him in the right way.

“Ask any of my players, they’ve got special thoughts on Anis - he has a big future in the game.”

The game also saw Adebayo Akinfenwa make his first appearance of the season following knee surgery in the summer.

The Beast was making his Championship debut at the age of 38 and despite not being fully fit, Ainsworth is very confident that the former Millwall striker will help Wycombe get results this season.

He continued: “Akinfenwa may play every week as he’s huge for us.

“He’ll be a thorn to anyone’s side at this level and when he is fully fit, along with Gape, Uche, McCarthy, and Tafazolli, I’ll be looking forward to it.

“Scott Kashket made history [for scoring Wycombe’s first goal in the Championship] and his endeavour was brilliant and he deserved it.”

“I am sure that first win is around the corner.”

Kashket’s goal was his first since scoring the winner away at Rotherham on October 26, 2019, and his first goal at Adams Park since scoring a brace against Southend on August 24, 2019.
