It was one of the scruffiest goals Wycombe have scored since entering the ranks of professional football 27 years ago, but it will still go down in club folklore.

There seemed little danger when Millwall’s Polish international goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski received a simple back pass, but he panicked as Wanderers striker Scott Kashket closed him down.

The ‘keeper failed to control the ball, Kashket prodded it towards the net and as it trickled almost apologetically over the line, history was made.

Wycombe finally had their first goal as a Championship club.

Coincidentally, their first ever goal in the Football League nearly three decades earlier also came from a defensive error.

The date was August 14, 1993, the opposition, Carlisle United.

The Cumbrians led 1-0 when a Wycombe corner caused confusion in the Carlisle defence and home defender Chris Curran headed into his own net.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw and Wanderers gained their first point as a professional club.

Sadly, there was no such happy ending at Adams Park on Saturday, as Kashket’s historic goal failed to prevent Wanderers from slumping to their fifth defeat in five games.

A penalty converted by Jed Wallace and a brilliant second goal by Ryan Leonard gave Millwall a 2-1 win, but it could have been a different story.

Shortly after Millwall’s equaliser from the penalty spot, Wycombe thought they had regained the lead only to be denied by a controversial decision.

When a Joe Jacobson corner kick evaded the goalkeeper and flew into the net, referee Andy Madley indicated a goal.

However, his assistant apparently saw a Millwall shirt being pulled, and the goal was disallowed.

In fairness, Millwall deserved their win after creating a host of good chances, but Wycombe were competitive throughout and with a little bit of luck could have got something out of the game.

Considering they were still missing key players Ryan Tafazolli, Dominic Gape and Uche Ikpeazu through injury, this was a much-improved performance.

There were plenty of positives, including impressive debuts for on loan Leicester defender Josh Knight and teenager Anis Mehmeti, and the return of Bayo Akinfenwa who made his first-ever appearance in the Championship at the age of 38.
