Despite falling to a sixth-straight league defeat, Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth is confident that his side will start to get points on the board.

The Chairboys lost 1-0 away at Reading with Lucas Joao scoring the winner midway through the second-half.

This was very much against the run of play, as Wycombe held their own and battled well up until the goal, when Liam Moore’s long ball found Joao, who smashed it past Ryan Allsop from 15-yards.

Speaking after the game, Ainsworth said: “The boys are gutted in the dressing room.

“I think a neutral would have said these two sides were evenly matched and that gives me hope and pride that we can be mixing it in this league – the Championship as well as the big boys.

“They [Reading] are top of the league and I think we have taken them all the way.

“We probably deserved something out of the game but key moments in the Championship count.

“In Leagues One and Two, you’d probably get away with craft, hardworking spirit and togetherness, but key moments cost us, and you need to have your quality.”

Wycombe started off the better side and frustrated the Berkshire outfit throughout, with Alex Samuel, Scott Kashket and Daryl Horgan pressing the Reading backline.

This allowed Matt Bloomfield and Dennis Adeniran to sit back and act as a protected guard for the Wycombe backline which worked very well.

However, Reading showed why they are hoping to get promoted this campaign as it was a long ball which caught Wycombe off guard.

They could see how good the Chairboys were at defending on the ground, and opted to try a different tactic, which ultimately got them their win.

And despite Fred Onyedinma having two great chances to equalise in the dying minutes, Wycombe left Berkshire empty-handed.

Ainsworth continued: “We troubled them.

“Of course we’re down but it is a fantastic league to be in and I am not going to take one day for granted.

“I’m still learning about my players still and they have got to give me the best every week.

“I am so convinced that we have got a group of players that is good enough to stay in the Championship.”

Up next for Wycombe is an away trip to Norwich on October 24.
