The second-half performance against Derby County pleased manager Gareth Ainsworth, but he admitted that his side must adapt to playing without Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Ainsworth also revealed that he was ‘disappointed’ with Wycombe’s first-half display which saw the Chairboys be 1-0 down at the break.

However, two of the second-half substitutes in Akinfenwa and Matt Bloomfield, worked well with each other which saw the latter get Wycombe’s equaliser eight minutes from time.

Speaking after the game, Ainsworth said: “I am pleased that we came out of it on the ascendancy.

"The second-half, we were very good as we got to grips on how we wanted to play, but we need to find a way to play without Bayo sometimes better than we do.

“It might be changing the formation, the style, but penetrating the Derby defence was tough as we needed to go up there and make the ball stick and once we did that with Bayo, he showed how important he is to us.

“There were a lot of good performances, but a lot to work on from the first-half.

“But the changes for me needed to be made and I am really pleased as two of the changes combined for the goal.

“It was great for him [Bloomfield] to get his first Championship goal but more importantly, for us to not lose the game.”

The manager also showed sympathy to both Scott Kashket and Anis Mehmeti who were taken off at the break.

Both players struggled to make an impact with Ainsworth needing to change the style and formation, in order to get back into the game after going 1-0 down.

He continued: "I feel for Anis and Scott coming off at half-time as they were victims of how the team played, and not their personal performances.

"But it opened up the chance for subs to come on and Bayo is huge for us and it was a huge result for us.

"He’s had a few nasty injuries which have hurt him and hurt us.

"But Bayo is going to be big for us if he can stay as fit as he can, and if he plays as many games as possible.

"Uche [Ikpeazu] could learn from him but at the moment, we’re reliant on the big man in one style of play and when he is not there, I've got to find a way of finding something different and how we can take teams and open teams up.

"It is hard sometimes at this level but myself, Dobbo and Sam will be working on getting the tactics in place, and I’m sure we will be competitive in most games that we play this year."

Saturday's match was the first time Wycombe had played Derby in any competition.
