Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth hopes his side can ‘start to climb the table’ after they drew 2-2 with Preston North End on Saturday.

The Chairboys were 1-0 down at half-time but found themselves 2-1 up with three minutes to go, thanks to goals from Garath McCleary and Scott Kashket.

But in the 87th minute, an unfortunate own goal from Jason McCarthy denied Wanderers what would have been their third win of the league season.

Speaking after the 2-2 draw against PNE on December 5, Ainsworth, who had two spells at the Lancashire-side during his playing days, said: “I’m pleased as it proves that we can do that to teams now.

“In the last two games, we did more than enough for a point against Stoke and against Preston, we did more than enough to deserve the three.

“It was a mistake for the first goal and a mistake for the second goal if I am honest, and maybe there was a foul in the build-up.

“I thought we had enough chances to win it but we didn’t stick them in.

“At Championship level, you have got to start turning these draws into wins but I am proud of the boys.

“We go again against Barnsley on Wednesday and hopefully we will start to climb up the table.”

It was the first league match between the two sides since January 2012, when Preston won 3-2 at Deepdale.

Matt Bloomfield, Gareth Ainsworth, and Anthony Stewart all played in that match for the Chairboys nearly nine years ago.
