Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth is reportedly one of the favourites to take over at Preston North End.

North End parted company with their previous boss, Alex Neil, on Sunday, March 21, after a dismal run of form which saw PNE achieve one win in nine league matches.

This poor run also included a defeat against Wanderers on March 13, and following their 1-0 home loss against Luton Town on March 20, the Lancashire side decided to part ways with the former Norwich manager.

Following the dismissal, the Sack Race has reported that Ainsworth, who has been in charge of the Chairboys since September 2012, is the favourite to take over at Deepdale with the current odds being at 5/1 (Bet Victor).

It is not the first time that Ainsworth has been linked away from Wanderers since taking over at the club, as in October 2019, rumours circulated that he was due to take over at Sunderland, after the Black Cats sacked Jack Ross.

Ainsworth stayed at the club and a few days later, the Chairboys defeated the ex-Premier League giants 1-0 at Adams Park, with Darius Charles scoring the winner.

Wycombe were eventually promoted to the Championship that season.

Following Neil's sacking, Frankie McAvoy has put in charge of Preston as an interim head coach.
