Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has explained why he wanted to play with a different formation against Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday.

In the 1-0 win, Wanderers started with a 3-4-2-1 formation which saw Fred Onyedinma and Jason McCarthy play as wing backs, whilst Jack Grimmer sat on the right-hand side of the centre back position, Joe Jacobson on the left, whilst Josh Knight was in the centre.

Curtis Thompson and Dom Gape worked as the anchors in midfield whilst Admiral Muskwe and Anis Mehmeti provided that creativity for Uche Ikpeazu, who bullied the Blackburn backline.

The move working brilliantly for Wycombe, as they swept aside the Lancashire side.

Ainsworth explained: “I have wanted to try three at the back for quite a while but it takes some doing.

“Your personnel has to change and your players have to get used to it.

“But Fred Onyedinma at left-wing back had an outstanding game, Jason McCarthy had energy bursting up and down and then the two in midfield.

“It gives you an opportunity to have an overload going forward at times but also, it is not a definite set formation.

“We have done well with 4-3-3 and 4-4-1-1 as we have won games with those formations, so, I will look at Rotherham to see what is the best to put out against them.”

Whilst Ainsworth was in a buoyant mood following the victory, he did admit that the formation could change as the games on gone.

Injury to important players and the change of gameplay from oppositions will lead to alterations during matches.

But Ainsworth is confident that results will continue as the season nears its conclusion.

He said: “We have been very successful with 4-3-3 and people question what style Wycombe Wanderers play, and the answer is, we try and play winning football.

“And it is good that we have got this adaptability to play these formations.”
