Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth believes his side ‘deserved the win’ after the Chairboys defeated Bristol City 2-1 at Adams Park.

The home side found themselves 1-0 down thanks to a wonderful strike by Tyreeq Bakinson on 29 minutes, but goals from Uche Ikpeazu and an injury-time penalty from Adebayo Akinfenwa, his first of the season and his first as a Championship player at the age of 38, secured a crucial win for Wanderers.

It means with just three games to go, Ainsworth’s men are now on 37 points for the season and are six points away from safety.

Speaking after the match, he said: “It’s overdue and we have deserved something like that.

“We’ve still had stuff go against like as I still think back to the Derby game at home when the ref denied us a penalty and a Daryl Horgan, which was chalked off despite him being onside.

“These are huge decisions, but, you can’t let this things stay on your mind.

“You have got to try and turn the tables in your own way.

“We have managed to do that in the last few games and I am hoping we can continue do to that a bit more in the final few games.

“We deserved to win the game from the chances we created, the energy we produced and the sheer belief that the boys had…it was an important one and we knew that.

“The boys have delivered and I am really proud.”

Up next for Wycombe is an away trip to Cardiff – one of Ainsworth’s former sides.

He played nine matches for the Bluebirds in a brief spell at the Welsh outfit in 2003, and he revealed that a victory over his former club this weekend will not make the win any sweeter, as Wycombe continue their aim to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

He continued: “It doesn’t matter one little bit.

“Three points any way we can as it’s all about results now.

“The big thing is that we have learnt a lot, and we are ending the season a hell of a lot better than how we started it.

“Lessons learnt stayed up, or lessons learnt coming back up - we have learnt plenty of lessons.”

After the away trip to Cardiff on Saturday, Wycombe will play their final home match of the season against Bournemouth on May 1, before the season ends on May 8 away at Middlesbrough.
