Wycombe Wanderers have confirmed the signing of Josh Scowen from Sunderland.

The 28-year-old, who played 100 times for the club in his first spell with the Chairboys, has re-joined the Adams Park outfit on a two-year deal from Sunderland.

The return of the ever-popular midfielder means he is Wycombe’s first signing of the transfer window.

Following his arrival, Gareth Ainsworth said: “Josh is a player with real Championship pedigree and that’s exactly what we’re looking for here, so I’m delighted to bring him back.

"I was a big admirer of his when I saw him playing in our youth team all those years ago, and it’s been no surprise that he’s made his way up the ladder and spent much of his career in the Championship.

“Wycombe fans will remember Josh as being a real battler in midfield, someone who can win the ball and make things happen for us going forward, and he will play a big part in our efforts to have another successful season.

“There are more signings in the pipeline but it’s great to get this one over the line in time for the start of pre-season training on Thursday, and I’m excited to see him back in the light and dark blue quarters.”

Scowen made his debut for the Chairboys in March 2011 aged 17 (two days before his 18th birthday), in Wanderers' 3-0 away win against Morecambe, before making his home bow a week later, in the 2-0 triumph over Stockport County.

He then enjoyed a loan spell at Eastbourne Borough before being recalled by Ainsworth not long after the gaffer was appointed as the full-time boss.

Between the 2012/13 season and the 2014/15 season, Scowen played 91 matches in the league and scored three times for the Chairboys.

The news was confirmed on June 29

He earned a move to Barnsley in January 2015 and won promotion as well as the Football League Trophy with the Tykes in the 2015/16 season, and after enjoying his first campaign with the Yorkshire outfit in the Championship, he earned the next big move of his career.

In the summer of 2017, Scowen moved back down south to join Queens Park Rangers, where he played 108 times across two-and-a-half years at Loftus Road, where he scored four goals.

He then moved back up north to join Sunderland, where he made 55 appearances for the Black Cats across a 18-mouth spell.
