Wycombe winger Garath McCleary has admitted that he doesn’t mind not scoring again this season if it means Wanderers gain promotion to the Championship.

The 34-year-old bagged a brace against Charlton Athletic in a 2-1 win for the Chairboys at Adams Park, which sent Gareth Ainsworth’s men up to fifth.

It’s his second double of the season, and he has now matched his total of the entirety of the last campaign with four goals, but he revealed that it’s not all about individual performances.

Speaking after the win over the South Londoners, he said: “I feel in good form, but, as long as we’re playing well and winning games that’s the main thing.

“It’s obviously nice as I want to score as many as I can, but if I don’t score anymore and we get promoted, that’s fine by me.

“It’s not really about individual goals, it is about the team as a collective and hopefully we can get to where we want to be which is promotion.

“It was obviously great to score just before half-time but it was a great shift from all the boys.

“I know I obviously scored the goals, but today is a credit to everyone from defence to the attack, as well as the players that didn’t play today as we push every day in training.

“There was a little scare near the end, but, as we have seen, Stocko saved us on a couple of occasions along with some last-ditch defending which we work on.

“We know that is going to happen in games, but we need to take the rough from the smooth.”

McCleary’s first goal was scored just before the interval after he had a couple of attempts miss the target moments earlier.

This led to the travelling Charlton fans at Adams Park to give the former Reading man a bit of stick, before the Jamaican international scored the opening goal of the contest in front of the away supporters.

He celebrated in front of the Lords Stand but admitted after the game that it was just ‘banter’ between the two parties.

McCleary said: “They said I was a poor man’s Ivan Toney, but he scored a few goals in League One so I’ll take that.

“It’s just a bit of banter with the away fans, and as long as they can take it, it’s fine.

Finally, on the Manchester City cup tie, he added: “For me, the league is our bread and butter as we want to finish as high as possible, but it’ll be a great game [on Tuesday] against some top, top, players in the world, and we are going to go there and give it our all and hopefully create an upset.

“But I think MK Dons on Saturday is the one to look at.”
