Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has revealed that he would ‘love to go and put one' on Manchester City.

The Chairboys will take on the current Premier League champions and holders of the Carabao Cup in the latter on Tuesday night in the third round.

City have won the trophy four times in the last four seasons, and are aiming to be the first club in the competition’s history to win it in five straight campaigns.

However, Ainsworth and his side are hoping to spoil the party when they visit the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

Speaking after the win over Charlton on September 18, the 48-year-old said: “It is an honour to be there.

“They are the biggest team in the country at the moment and they are the current holders of the cup, so I think this is an important one to go there and be competitive.

“I have got a few legs to feature in that and maybe a few changes here and there, and obviously there will be a style of play [to implement on City].

“It is going to be really tough, but we will give it a go.

“But I will be lying if I said I wasn’t looking at MK Dons in the hotel as my bread and butter is the league.

“But Man City away? Brilliant.

“Let the fans enjoy it.

"I am going to enjoy it and take everything that I possibly can from it, and we will find a way to get competitive.

“I won’t be making wholesale changes, but I would love to go and put one on City as not many teams do that.

"We won’t be showing them too much respect.

"We will give them a good game and we are looking forward to seeing what we can do."

The fixture on Tuesday night will be the Chairboys’ first visit to the Etihad Stadium, but it won't be their first trip up north to face the Citizens.

The two sides have battled it out on four occasions prior to now, with Wycombe taking on Man City at their old ground, Maine Road, twice.

The last meeting between the two sides at City's former home was a Division Two  (League One) fixture in April 1999, which Wanderers won 2-1.

Andrew Baird and Sean Devine got the goals for Wycombe that day, but at the end of that season, City were promoted to the second tier of English football after they defeated Gillingham in the Play-Off final, whilst Wanderers finished in 19th place – two points away from relegation.

The match on Tuesday night will kick-off at 7.45pm.
