Wycombe have the chance to quickly put a frustrating defeat behind them as they travel to Shrewsbury on Tuesday evening.

The loss to MK Dons at the weekend may not have happened if it wasn’t for Anthony Stewart’s red card, but that could be forgotten if Wanderers pick up three points in Shropshire.

It will be something of a comedown for Chairboys fans after around 4,000 fans followed the team around the country in the last week, including that memorable trip to the Etihad Stadium.

Two hundred and fifty would be a respectable figure to take to Shrewsbury for a midweek game, with an Adams Park homecoming on the horizon on Saturday.

There may be a few changes for Wycombe amidst the busy schedule, but Stewart will be available after his suspension was overturned.

Shrewsbury don’t make it easy for their opponents and this game will be no different, with it likely to be a real physical battle.

Dom Gape would be a more than adequate replacement for either Curtis Thompson or Josh Scowen should Gareth Ainsworth wish to freshen the legs in midfield, while David Wheeler’s aerial prowess could prove very useful.

The last time the two sides met at The New Meadow was in March 2019, when the hosts scored twice late on to break Wycombe hearts.

That was in the midst of Wanderers’ lengthy winless run which nearly plunged them back into League Two, and many left the away end that day seriously concerned about just that.

However, we all know what’s happened since then and Wycombe now go to Shrewsbury playing some excellent stuff.

If they can find a finishing touch a little more regularly, Ainsworth’s side are certainly promotion contenders.

The Shrews struggled to adapt to having manager Steve Cotterill back in the dugout at the start of the season after he was in hospital with Covid-19 in the spring.

However, they have picked up recently and are unbeaten in three, taking a point from clashes with Crewe and Sheffield Wednesday and beating Wimbledon at the weekend.

The Salopians have a couple of familiar names in their squad, including Aaron Pierre, who made 129 league appearances for the Chairboys.

Sam Cosgrove also ended up there after being linked with a move to south Bucks in the summer, and has two goals in his last five.

Although Shrewsbury look like one of the weaker sides in the league on paper and have a fairly thin squad, they compete in every game and will give Wycombe a real test.
