Curtis Thompson scored an injury-time winner as Wycombe Wanderers defeated Morecambe 4-3 in an incredible match at Adams Park.

The Shrimps, who won on their last visit at Adams Park three years ago, were quick out of the traps as they took the lead just three minutes into the game.

The visitors were awarded a free-kick about 20-yards outside the Wycombe box and it was taken by Adam Phillips.

His long-ball into the danger zone was cleared away by Ryan Tafazolli and David Stockdale, who played the 400th league game of his career in the 2-1 win over Shrewsbury on Tuesday night came a long way off his line and was in no man’s land.

Tafazolli’s header was cleared to a respectable distance, but Alfie McCalmont, who has played every league game for Morecambe this season, was on hand to pass the ball into an empty goal as Stockdale was left flat-footed.

Three minutes in and the visitors had taken the lead with McCalmont’s first of the season.

As the rain poured at a soaked Adams Park, Stephen Robinson’s men continued to take control as Stockdale was again at fault.

His wayward pass was picked up by Arthur Gnahoua who drove through the Wycombe midfield.

He then found an unmarked Phillips who forced the keeper into a good save from 10-yards after 18 minutes.

However, he was helpless just seven minutes later as Morecambe doubled their lead.

Cole Stockton eluded the defence before he played a beautiful cross into the box which was smashed in on the half-volley from Phillips.

An assist and a goal for Morecambe’s number 18.

He was there to fire it past Stockdale from seven-yards to give Morecambe a deserved lead.

It was his fifth goal in 11 matches this season.

Liam Gibson nearly made it three on the stroke of half-time but Stockdale again forced a save, in what was a poor first-half for the Chairboys.

Wycombe offered nothing as Kyle Letheren in the Morecambe net was rarely tested, and apart from a Joe Jacobson corner which he punched away, a Sam Vokes header that went wide and an Anthony Stewart shot that went over the bar, Wanderers were invisible.

But whatever Gareth Ainsworth said at the break worked, as Wycombe fought back.

Just minutes into the second-half and Wanderers got a goal back through Daryl Horgan.

His first league goal for Wanderers and his first for the club since his debut against Brentford last September, was scored 20-yards from goal, despite Letheren getting a huge hand onto it.

Three minutes later and Morecambe’s 2-0 lead was gone as Vokes equalised for Wanderers.

Stewart’s teasing cross was glanced in by the Welshman from inside the six-yard box in front of the Chairboys fan,s and his third strike of the season put Wanderers level.

Wycombe were now in cruise control as Horgan nearly got his second of the contest, but Letheren pushed his effort wide, Vokes had two attempts but each of them went either side of the post, and Thompson, who has only scored once for Wanderers, cracked his effort over from distance.

All of this happened in 10 second-half minutes.

It was intense.

Morecambe were overwhelmed with the barrage of Wycombe attacks, but, Stockton and Phillips most forced Stockdale into saves as both sides tried to find a winner.

Brandon Hanlan, who came on for Jordan Obita nearly scored with his first touch as his lob struck the post after 71 minutes.

But the Chairboys fans didn’t have to wait long to go 3-2 up, as seconds later, Jacobson’s corner flew past Letheren to complete the comeback.

The Whites Beaconsfield Terrace end went crazy was Wanderers had come back from behind to lead when it seemed very unlikely following their first-half display.

Morecambe boss Stephen Robinson was then shown a red card in the aftermath and it looked like it was becoming an afternoon to forget for the visitors.

However, with 10 minutes remaining, substitute Jonah Ayunga’s deflected finish flew beyond Stockdale and into the Wycombe goal.

The sub nearly got the winner but his long-range effort was caught by Stockdale, which gave Thompson his moment of glory.

The former Notts County man, who hadn’t scored for Wycombe since the 3-2 win over Doncaster in January 2019, smashed in a side-footed effort with his right foot past Letheren to snatch the win.

An incredible, incredible match.

Wycombe move up to fifth whilst Morecambe drop down to 13th.
