Wycombe Wanderers travel up to Doncaster this weekend to try and continue their promotion push.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men sit second in the league and are enjoying a brilliant run of wins at Adams Park, as the victory over Gillingham last weekend saw the Chairboys secure their seventh win in a row in the league – their best ever run of victories at home since being promoted into the EFL in the early 1990s.

Their away form on the other hand has been a bit hit and miss.

Wins at Cheltenham and Shrewsbury were impressive, draws at Oxford and Wigan were respectable, and defeats at Sunderland and MK Dons saw Wycombe head back to South Bucks empty-handed.

And they know that a victory against the league’s basement team would hugely help them in their quest for Championship football.

However, even though Donny are rooted at the foot of the table, their win over MK Dons last week could start a revival to get themselves up the league.

So, to get ready for this weekend’s match, I spoke to Liam Holden from the Doncaster Free Press to get his views on Saturday's fixture.

1. Were you expecting a better start to the season when Richie Willens took over in May?

LH: “While I probably didn’t think it would be quite as tough as it has been, there was always an expectation Rovers would take time to come together under Wellens.

“He spoke of them being a work in progress and this season being the start of a rebuild rather than one where they would immediately push for promotion.

“They had shocking luck with injuries and Covid during pre-season so a slow start was expected - it’s just probably gone on for a bit longer than initially thought.”

2. How much of a morale boost was the win over MK Dons last weekend? Considering Donny were thumped the week before against Ipswich?

“Huge. The result itself was obviously great, and particularly against a team that's been doing so well this season.

“But it was the manner of the performance that was most pleasing and has raised confidence for what is to come.

“MK Dons had a long stretch of possession and pressure in the second half and it has previously been in those circumstances when Rovers have folded.

“They stood up to it, stayed organised and disciplined, and ended up getting the winner themselves. It was really big, particularly on the back of the capitulation at Ipswich.”

3. Can you see Doncaster forming a good run after last week’s win?

LH: “Because they are still finding their feet, I'm not sure we'll see them embark on a long run of positive results but I fully expect them to start picking up points more consistently and pulling themselves away from the bottom of the table.”

4. Which players do Wycombe need to be on the lookout for?

“Tommy Rowe is a big player for Rovers.

“He returned to the club after two years in the Championship with Bristol City and has done so as a left back rather than a midfielder.

“His engine is phenomenal and he will often be the most advanced player, which has been reflected in his goals tally so far.

“Ben Close is settling in nicely in midfield after his move from Portsmouth while young Manchester United loanee Ethan Galbraith looks incredibly promising.”

5. The last time these two sides played was on February 29, 2020 – the final game before lockdown, in which Doncaster won 3-1. How different are things at Donny from that match?

“The change has been really significant - obviously starting with the man in the dugout with Darren Moore leaving the club in March this year.

“But the amount of change is perhaps best reflected in the fact only three of that day's matchday 18 remain with Rovers.

“The turnover in personnel both on the pitch and in the technical area has been a big reason for Rovers' decline from play-off chasers at that point to a side very much in the early stages of a rebuild.

"There is hope that it won't be too long before they will be back there though.”

6. How do you see it going on Saturday?

LH: “It'll be very tough for Rovers but they've played pretty well against the top sides they've faced so far.

“Home form has been good too so I fancy them to build on the win last time out with a coupon busting 2-1 triumph.”

My prediction: Doncaster Rovers 1-2 Wycombe Wanderers
