Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has defended David Stockdale following Wanderers’ 4-1 home drubbing against Ipswich Town on November 2.

The former Tractor Boy shot-stopper produced several good saves in the defeat, but ultimately didn't have the best of days in a Chairboys shirt.

Ipswich’s first was scored by Bersant Celina, whose long-range effort took a deflection before Stockdale got a huge hand on it but couldn’t keep it out.

The second was from a Kyle Edwards cross which the keeper clawed away, but the rebound fell to Macaulay Bonne who smashed in the follow up.

Wes Burns then scored a brilliant strike which Stockdale could do nothing about, before the goalie ran a good few yards out of his box to close down an onrushing Celina.

However, the former Manchester City attacker easily got past Stockdale, before tapping the ball into an empty net to round off the win – the first for any team in this fixture, following two consecutive draws.

However, despite the performance, Gareth Ainsworth was full of praise for David Stockdale.

He said: “[Their first goal was] their first shot on target and it was tough to take.

“Stocko has almost pulled off a great save, but he is brilliant keeper.

“His form is for the top two divisions without doubt (Championship and Premier League) and he is a great number one.

“So, we have seen some brilliant saves, brilliant goals and brilliant action so far this season and tonight didn’t quite get to the level where we have been at this season, but, we have to be sure we are back on it for the next

Stockdale has played 39 games for Wycombe across three spells at the club.
