Wycombe Wanderers will hope to build on their brilliant start to 2022 when they take on

Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium on January 22.

The league leaders extended their unbeaten run in the calendar at the weekend after dismantling ‘M40 rivals’ Oxford United with a 2-0 win, whilst the Shrimps are three points from safety in 21st place.

In fact, the League One first timers have only won six league matches this season from their 26 games played.

Going into the match, the Chairboys are currently ranked eighth across the top four tiers in most away points won this season (23), second to Wigan Athletic (31).

However, Saturday’s opponents have been a thorn in the Wanderers’ side in recent memory with Wycombe’s last win at the Globe Arena coming in August 2015.

In the 19 times they have faced each other, Wycombe have been victorious on 10 occasions, drawing five and losing four.

The most recent meeting remains fresh in the minds of delighted Chairboys supporters.

After going 2-0 down, Wycombe rallied in typical fashion and turned the game around to win 4-3 with a Curtis Thompson last-gasp winner. Not to mention Joe Jacobson’s direct corner goal that made it a true Adams Park classic.

Goals in this fixture are common with the last two meetings providing 13 goals. In fact, only one encounter has finished goalless – 0-0 in February 2009 at Morecambe.

This Shrimps team, managed by Stephen Robinson, are a different prospect to the Kevin Ellison side that hampered the Blues so frequently in League Two.

In the nine seasons that they crossed paths, Wycombe have finished higher in all but one (2013/14).

This season, they look to carry that on as 20 places separate the two teams.

Morecambe’s maiden venture in League One has not been smooth sailing.

They lost promotion-winning manager Derek Adams to Bradford City before kicking a ball and have been battling with relegation from the off.

Since their defeat at Adams Park, they have won just two games in 16 matches. It is not all doom and gloom in Lancashire as Cole ‘the goal’ Stockton has fired in 16 goals so far this season.

His sights will be set on breaking the club record for most league goals in a football league campaign, currently set by Phil Jevons (18). Hopefully not on Saturday for Wycombe’s sake.

Robinson will hope to avoid caution this time around from the referee, Ben Toner.

He has officiated Morecambe nine times and Wycombe on six occasions. 51 yellow cards and three red cards have been given in his 20 games this season.

The game will kick-off at 3pm.
