Wycombe Wanderers ended a run of seven league games without a win as they defeated Cambridge United 3-0 at Adams Park.

A double from Anis Mehmeti and Garath McCleary's strike was all that was needed to get all three points, in a match where they were terrific from start to finish.

Prior to kick off, there was a firework display to celebrate the American holiday of Mardi Gras, before both sets of fans stood up and applauded the people and residents of Ukraine, following the invasion by Russia last week.

On the football, Wanderers were brilliant in what was a no-nonsense first-half, as they took the away side to the sword.

On nine minutes, the Chairboys had a great chance to take the lead as Sam Vokes did brilliantly to win the ball of Lloyd Jones, who was playing his first game this calendar year due to injury.

The Welshman disposed the returning centre back before finding Mehmeti, but the Albanianโ€™s bending effort from just inside the box was easily saved by Dimitar Mitov.

However, they did not have to wait long for their goal, as it duly came just two minutes later.

Daryl Horgan jogged forward without any Cambridge player making a challenge, so the Irish international unleashed a powerful drive at the Us goal.

Fortuitously, the shot took a wicked deflection off Mehmeti, it wrong-footed Mitov and Wanderers were 1-0 up.

It was his sixth of the season and his first since the 3-3 draw against Sunderland at the start of January.

You would not have thought the Chairboys were winless in seven going into todayโ€™s contest, as they doubled their lead just four minutes later.

This time, Mehmeti was the provider as his perfectly delivered cross found Garath McCleary who smashed home his seventh of the campaign.

It was his first goal for the club since the 2-1 midweek win over Burton Albion just before Christmas, and every strike he has scored for Wanderers this season has come at Adams Park.

Ironically, all of his four goals for the club last season came away from home.

Two goals inside 15 minutes was the perfect response following their defeat to Accrington Stanley on Saturday, and as the half went on, it looked as if it was only a matter of time before the lead was increased.

Both McCleary and Vokes had their efforts go wide, whilst Horgan and Mehmeti were pulling the away sideโ€™s backline apart.

It was a much-needed first-half display.

Cambridge rarely threatened with Adam May and Sam Smith forcing David Stockdale into relatively comfortable saves, but in truth, the Us were well below par as Wycombe deserved their two-goal lead at half-time.

In a very quiet second half, Wycombe wrapped up the win with six minutes remaining when Mehmeti tapped in from close range after he was teed up by McCleary.

The result means Wycombe are now seventh in the table, one point off the play-off places.

Up next is Crewe Alexandra away, which will be Gareth Ainsworthโ€™s 500th in charge.
