Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth believes his side were ‘fantastic’ as the Chairboys easily defeated promotion rivals Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Adams Park.

Garath McCleary scored a first-half brace which has now taken him to 11 goals for the season, which not only put the Adams Park outfit back into the play-off places, but also means Wycombe are now unbeaten in nine league games.

This is their longest unbeaten run in league football for five years.

The fixture against the Pilgrims was also dedicated to Matt Bloomfield, following the midfielder’s retirement from the game in February, after 18-and-a-half years as a player with the club.

The boss said: “It was Blooms’ big day and I told the boys to embrace it and get energy from this.

“Some clubs might not want something like this as it may interfere with the game or take our focus away from the game.

“I go the other way as I say embrace it.

“This guy has been with us for 19 years.

“This is why we’re playing games like this because of people like Matt Bloomfield.

“I told the players to embrace it and get the energy from the crowd and he is one of you (a supporter).

“Today was a real fitting tribute for Matt towards his career and it was brilliant.”

On the match themselves, which was their 21st this league season, which also saw Wanderers keep their 17th clean sheet.

Ainsworth continued: “The game was fantastic and we had a plan as I asked the boys to play a certain style in terms of pressing and possession and they absolutely nailed it.

“The players today were fantastic and they deserved the win.

“Just because we did something today doesn’t mean we will have to do it again in the next game.

“We don’t want to show our hand and if we do play Plymouth a third time, as it may happen, who knows what we will do?

“They were brilliant, especially in the first half and I am not trying to be disrespectful towards Plymouth, but I really did we were brilliant.

“We scored our two goals and Garath was brilliant again but there is so much going on that I was pleased with that people won’t know about, and I’m really proud of the boys.

“There were two fantastic goals and an all-round great performance.

“It was also great to give Jack Grimmer, David Wheeler, and Jordon Obita minutes on the pitch as well.

“We’ve got to now recover as we’ve got Wimbledon in a couple of days.”
