Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has revealed the expectations at the club have grown following their 1-1 draw away at AFC Wimbledon on Easter Monday.

The Chairboys came back from behind to share the spoils against the struggling Dons, who have now not won in 25 consecutive league matches.

Speaking after the match, he disclosed that some of his players considered the result to be a defeat, but he insisted that the draw is another point closer to their promotion push for the Championship.

At the time of writing, Wanderers remain in the play-off places.

He said: “The expectation the boys put on themselves is brilliant.

“I said to the boys that Wimbledon have drawn a lot of matches this season and that they don’t get beat a lot.

“They know they are good players and I am so proud that we are a time that wants to be playing towards the Championship.

“Five years ago or so we would never have said that so that’s testament to everyone at the club."

On the match itself, the boss added: “I think the change of shape was something that we needed to do as Wimbledon stepped on us more in the first-half as they won a lot of physical battles.

“But with being said, the stats are in our favour.

“We just needed to put a goal away and settle the nerves a little bit and we didn’t do that until the 80th minute and we almost won it.

“They too had a couple of chances to win it but that’s football to be on 77 points at this stage of the season is incredible for this club.”

The draw means Wycombe have now only won two matches out of the last 15 against AFC Wimbledon.
