Gareth Ainsworth has insisted that he is ‘happy’ to be at Wycombe Wanderers following their League One play-off final defeat against Sunderland.

The Chairboys fell to a 2-0 loss at Wembley Stadium against the Black Cats in a match where they were second best.

And despite not gaining the third and final place in England’s second tier for next season, Ainsworth’s name has been linked to various teams in the Championship.

These include one of his former clubs Queens Park Rangers, and his boyhood team, Blackburn Rovers, as both sides look for a new manager.

Ainsworth was also linked to the Preston North End job in March 2021, and coincidentally was one of the favourites to take over at Sunderland in 2019.

However, the 49-year-old revealed he has no intention of leaving the Adams Park outfit, and that he will continue to ‘everything’ he can to ‘try and improve’ Wycombe.

Speaking after the loss on May 21, he said: “I couldn’t have better owners.

“You’ve got all your sheiks and your billionaires, give me Rob and Pete Couhig any day because they have done nothing but give me support.

“Rob came up to me at the end of the game and gave me a hug and said, ‘I’ve got to go home tomorrow to do some work, but it has nothing to do with the result.

‘You’ve done a fantastic job, keep going and let me know if there is anything you need for me next season.’

“That’s all I needed to hear and I am proud to be the Wycombe manager.”

On being linked to other teams, Ainsworth continued: “I’m not someone that chases cash or status, I’m really happy with where I am.

“And if people are happy with me, I’ll continue to do everything I can to try and improve this football club.”

Ainsworth has been in charge of Wycombe since September 2012.
