Winning a cup tie inside 90 minutes for the first time in nearly two decades to needing a security guard to leave a stadium, here are five things you might have missed from Wycombe’s 2-1 win over Northampton in the League Cup.
1. The long wait is over!
Wycombe’s victory over the Cobblers on August 9 ended an incredible run of not winning a League Cup match within 90 minutes after nearly 16 years.
The last time the Chairboys won in the allotted time was on December 19, 2006, when Jermaine Easter’s goal gave Wanderers a famous 1-0 triumph over Charlton Athletic, then of the Premier League, in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The League Cup hoodoo is over! Wycombe have won a match inside 90 minutes for the first time since 2006! A free-kick from @joe_jacobson and a D'Mani Mellor strike have put Wanderers into the second round #Chairboys
Since then, Wycombe have played 22 League Cup matches with each of their five wins being achieved via a penalty shootout.
Their success at Sixfields ended that unwanted run which lasted 5,712 days.
However, the wait for them to win a HOME League Cup tie in 90 minutes goes back even further, as they last achieved that in August 2003, when they defeated Wimbledon 2-0 at Adams Park with Richard Harris getting the goals.
2. Hopelessly Devoted to You
The match between the two took place one day after the death of Australian singer, actress, activist, and icon, Olivia Newton-John.
The 73-year-old, who was known for her roles in the musical films ‘Grease’ and ‘Xanadu’, passed away after a third bout of cancer after being originally diagnosed in 2017.
Nice bit of Olivia Newton-John blasting around Sixfields 💚

Hundreds of thousands of tributes across the globe have been left for the much-loved actress, with Northampton Town also honouring the late singer.
Prior to kick-off, songs over the club’s tannoy included hits from mentioned movies above.
3. Tractor causes traffic
A crowd of 2,711 were inside Sixfields to watch the cup tie which included 471 Wycombe fans that made the trip up the M1.
However, for some, the 90 minute journey took considerably longer due to numerous temporary traffic lights along the A418…and a damaged tractor on the A508.
The piece of farming machinery suffered a burst tyre on its trailer which caused huge delays near the stadium, which lead to some people conducting traffic.
The fun of going to away games, hey?
4. A former Premier League manager cheering on his son
When we got the team sheets for the match in Northamptonshire, one name on the Cobblers bench stood out.
Little did we know that his dad was sitting just a few feet away from us.

Max Dyche, 19, was an unused sub in this club’s defeat in the inaugural round of the competition, but his dad, former Burnley manager, Sean, was still present to cheer his old side on and take photos with supporters.
He spent two years with the club between 2005 and 2007, where he played 62 times, and helped the team win promotion to League One in 2006.
5. Security guards at full-time
It’s fair to say that Danny Hylton is very much a pantomime villain with Wycombe Wanderers.
He has played 14 games against the Chairboys and has scored five goals against the Adams Park club, which included a hat-trick in September 2016.
Danny Hylton gets a lovely reception from the Wycombe fans as he comes on as part of a triple substitution 😂

His appearance from the substitute’s bench for the final 29 minutes was greeted with boos and jeers from the Wanderers faithful, and this seemed to worry the 33-year-old forward.
Just before he left the ground, he requested that a couple of security guards escorted him to his car after the full-time whistle.
He has played against Wycombe for Aldershot Town, Bury, Oxford United, Luton Town, and now Northampton Town respectively.
