Wycombe Wanderers’ winless run at Hillsborough Stadium continued as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

The game got off to the worst possible start for the Chairboys on Gareth Ainsworth’s 10th anniversary in charge of the club, and Wanderers’ 135th since their formation, as they went a goal down inside 38 seconds.

Marvin Johnson’s cross from the right evaded everyone in the Wycombe box apart from Joe Jacobson, who knocked the ball beyond Max Stryjek to give the Owls an early lead.

Despite going a goal down so early on, Wanderers improved as Dom Gape forced former Chairboy David Stockdale into a good save, and Jason McCarthy’s header went wide of the mark.

And they didn’t need to wait long to find their equaliser as Ainsworth’s men drew level on nine minutes through Sam Vokes.

Anis Mehmeti managed to beat three players on the byline and laid it off to the Welshman who smashed home his first of the campaign.

It was a brilliant assist from the Albanian and a well-taken goal by the former Stoke City and Burnley striker.

The goal was deserved but the tide turned, as Wednesday were in the ascendency.

Stryjek was alert to deny both Barry Bannan and Will Vaulks, but he was helpless in preventing the former from giving the hosts their second lead of the afternoon.

Michael Smith, who claimed to have scored their first before it was given as a Jacobson own goal, put in a dangerous ball that glided across the box, and there was the former Aston Villa man to smash it home from close-range.

It was his second of the season.

Wycombe’s best spell of the second half came in and around the hour mark, when a McCarthy header went over, whilst an Anis Mehmeti shot was saved by Stockdale.

This was the best as it got for the away side, as Calum Paterson got Wednesday’s third in the final few seconds on his 100th appearance for the club.

This mean Wycombe are winless in all of their five visits to Hillsborough.

Up next for Wanderers is a home match against Plymouth Argyle on October 1.
