Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth believes ‘one or two’ players may depart Adams Park on loan to help with their progression in getting into the first team.

This comes after the Chairboys were knocked out of the EFL Trophy via the group stage following a 1-1 draw against Peterborough United.

Ainsworth’s men needed to beat the Posh to go through, whilst the Cambridgeshire-based team just needed a point from the game to prevail out of the group.

This means the league and FA Cup are the only fixtures the club will competitively play in until the end of the season.

And despite practice matches being arranged for fringe players when Wanderers have a free week, some members of the team will now briefly leave Wycombe to seek regular first-team football.

Ainsworth explained: “One or two loans may happen now because some of the players need competitive football.

“There are several players that will be future players for this club without a doubt.

“Sam Grace has done a terrific job in terms of what he has done with the development boys which Chris Forino last year and Anis Mehmeti the year before.

“That’s a bigger success rate than most clubs, so if we can get one a year that would be fantastic.

“We’ve had a few practice games against Maidenhead, Norwich, we’ve got Bournemouth coming up, but it’s tough when you’ve got the injuries.”

On the performance against the Posh at Adams Park, Ainsworth concluded: “I’m disappointed because I really wanted to progress in this.

“We went for strong despite the nine changes, and I think that shows where the club is now and there were some good individual performances.

“Daryl got his goal and he worked really hard in the midfield, it was good seeing Brandon and D’Mani start as they were lively, Christie Ward made his debut and nearly nicked a goal at the end.

“Max Stryjek played well too, and one thing I will say is that Peterborough had to put their main man on to get them back level and he’s done a great job in doing that.

“Fair play to Peterborough as they are through.”
