Wycombe Wanderers' push for the play-off places took a huge hit as they fell to a 4-0 away defeat at  Ipswich Town.

First-half strikes from George Hirst and Conor Chaplin, along with a Wes Burn goal and a Freddie Ladapo penalty in the second period, succumbed the Chairboys to their 14th league loss of the season, as they made it four games without a win.

The opening 45 minutes saw Ipswich, who had only lost just one game in the league at home this season, start on the front foot as they thought they had taken the lead inside 15 minutes.

However, Hirst’s well-taken goal after going around Max Stryjek was ruled out for offside.

Wanderers continued to let Kiernan McKenna’s side have the ball and soak in the possession, but the pressure eventually gave in as Ipswich took the lead on 38 minutes, through Hirst.

He rose the highest to head in a Leif Davis corner to register his fourth goal in as many games.

Seven minutes later on the stroke of half-time, Ipswich doubled their advantage through Chaplin.

His low finish beyond a statuesque Stryjek was his sixth in eight matches.

Wycombe rarely threatened as Lewis Wing’s effort from the edge of the box flew just wide of the target, but in truth, Wanderers offered nothing.

The second 45 was a continuation of the first, with the Tractor Boys wrapping up the win inside the opening 12 minutes thanks to a well-taken Burns strike.

His first-time effort flew past Stryjek, as he registered his second goal against Wanderers in as many seasons.

Ladapo then made it 4-0 with 15 minutes remaining from the penalty spot, after Josh Scowen bought down Kyle Edwards in the box.

The result leaves Wycombe eighth in the table, five points from the play-off places with six games left.

One positive for the Chairboys was that Dom Gape made his long awaited return after a four-month absence with injury.

Additionally, Christie Ward made his Football League debut in the defeat.

Up next for the Chairboys is Forest Green Rovers on Easter Monday.
