Wycombe Wanderers’ play-off push took a huge hit as they fell to a shock 1-0 away defeat to relegation-threatened Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.

In the defeat in North West, the Chairboys registered 20 shots on goal, but could only force four on target as the hosts secured their first win in 10 matches.

Matt Bloomfield’s side started the better as Tjay De Barr, Brandon Hanlan, and Lewis Wing all tried their luck inside the opening 10 minutes, but it was Morecambe who had the opening half’s best opportunity.

On 15 minutes, Donald Love’s cross was headed over the bar by Daniel Crowley from six-yards.

The first period petered out with Wanderers dominating the possession, but they couldn’t find a way around the stubborn Shrimps' defence.

The second half was similar to the first with Wycombe bossing the ball, and after another period of flatness, the fixture kicked into life in the final 15 minutes when both sides looked for the winner.

For the Chairboys, Wycombe nearly won it when Wing’s header was clawed away from a Joe Jacobson corner.

David Wheeler, Josh Scowen, and Garath McCleary also went close, but to no avail.

Down the other end with a minute remaining, Stockton acrobatically scored his sixth goal of the season.

Wycombe threw the kitchen sink to find an equaliser, but Connor Ripley denied both McCleary and Jason McCarthy, whilst Jack Grimmer hit the bar with a looping header.

The result was Morecambe’s first victory in 10 matches, and their second in a row at the Mazuma over Wanderers.

Wycombe remain eighth on 65 points, five off points the top six.

They take on Cambridge United on Tuesday evening.
