Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield has described his side’s 3-0 home loss to Exeter City as a ‘reality check’ and that they’ll ‘learn from their lessons’.

The Chairboys went into the match full of optimism following a summer of new signings, along with positive changes being made to Adams Park.

However, the game turned on its head when Jack Aitchison scored after 24 seconds and Will Aimson doubled their lead just three minutes later.

Max Stryjek saved a Sam Nombe penalty after seven minutes before the match eventually calmed down.

Wanderers were lacklustre and offered little attacking threat, and in the final 10 minutes, James Scott wrapped up the win for the away side.

It was their second ever win at Adams Park and their first since New Year's Day 2013.

Speaking on the result, Bloomfield said: “For the first goal, we gave the ball away in a dangerous area and it unfortunately ends up in the back of the net.

“We’re then in a well organised position for a corner and up conceding which was very disappointing.

"With the penalty, you’re thinking ‘what’s going on?’ but football has a way of throwing up these situations and we need to do our best and get through it.

“From the way we conceded the goals, the lads were shell-shocked as well.

“There was a lot of planning this week but we found ourselves 2-0 down inside four minutes.

“This is a reality check but this is just one game from 46.

“It may take a bit longer in terms of clicking together but if that’s the case then we’re comfortable with that.

“We’re going to stay calm in this situation as there is a long way to go and we’ll learn from our lessons.”

On the team selection, which saw him keep with the same starting 11 following the 0-0 draw against Cardiff City, which also included seven debutants, he added: “We need to pick ourselves up.

“We performed very well against Cardiff last week and we barely conceded any goals during the course of pre-season versus decent opposition.

“And with Cardiff, we looked solid and kept a clean sheet.

“But due to the injury situation that we encountered over the summer, which is something that I have never experienced in my career, we’ve decided to go with the same team as last week as we thought that would be the team to help us win the game, but it sadly wasn’t.”
