Freddie Potts’ stunning volley wasn’t enough as Wycombe lost 3-1 away at Charlton Athletic.

Wycombe’s five-game unbeaten run in League One came to an end at The Valley, as did a four-game unbeaten streak against Charlton.

Slobodan Tedic’s strike eight minutes from time secured victory for the hosts, as Wycombe were left unrewarded from a much improved second-half showing. A brief loss of concentration from the Wycombe defence allowed Tedic to ghost into the box, and his mis-hit effort on goal bounced awkwardly into the back of the Wycombe net.

Corey Blackett-Taylor secured the points for the home side in second-half stoppage time, following an excellent solo run into the Wycombe box.

Miles Leaburn opened the scoring for the hosts in the 28th minute with a fine finish from a difficult angle, following a period of sustained Charlton pressure.

Potts’ first professional goal was one to remember. A Wycombe was headed into the youngster’s path, and his first-time volley was sweetly struck into the corner of the net.

The atmosphere at The Valley was tense in the opening exchanges, with a disgruntled Addicks faithful keen to see their side improve on recent performances. They got their wish as Charlton started the game on the front foot.

Max Stryjek was forced into two big saves inside the opening ten minutes, Alfie May was eager to make his presence felt amongst the Wanderers back line, Charlton’s number nine was denied on ten minutes by Wycombe’s Pole in the goal.

The home side had numerous opportunities to further their lead after the opening goal, and Max Stryjek was a busy man in the Wycombe goal.

Wycombe ended the half strongly and could’ve been level before the break. Sam Vokes saw his header crash off the bar with the last action of the first half, one of many chances that came as a result of Luke Leahy’s left boot.

Wycombe started the second half like a bull at the gate, eager to catch Charlton out early in the half.

Brandon Hanlan had Wycombe’s best chance of the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net after a wonderful surge forward from Garath McCleary.

Attention turns to next Saturday now, where Wycombe host League One newcomers Carlisle United in the club’s designated Family Day.
