Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield has urged the club’s fans to be ‘patient’ with new signing Fred Onyedinma.
The 27-year-old has returned to Adams Park for a fourth spell following his release from Luton Town in June, ending his three-year stint with the Kenilworth Road side.
And despite having interest to join several EFL teams, as well as receiving offers abroad, the Nigerian has decided to return to Buckinghamshire.
However, it is not known when fans will be able to see Onyedinma back in the light and dark blue quarters as Bloomfield admitted the club will ‘take their time’ with his fitness.
He told the media ahead of the Chairboys’ trip to Northampton Town at Saturday lunchtime: “We have to be patient with Fred.
“He’s not had a pre-season, he’s done some individual training with a few bits and pieces, and he’s an athlete with a lot of pace and power.
“We need to ensure that we look after him and build him up with the right load.
“To manage everyone’s expectations, I think it’s right that we take our time with him and make sure he’s fit and strong for the long term.”
Onyedinma is one of many players to return to Adams Park for a second, third and in this case, fourth spell with the club.
His first stint was in the 2014/15 season before he re-signed four years later for the 2018/19 campaign.
Both years were on loan from Millwall with his move to Buckinghamshire being made permanent in the summer of 2019 – his third arrival at Wanderers.
He would spend the next two years with the club before joining Luton in 2021.
Bloomfield continued: “It’s fantastic news for the football club.
“For the supporters, they think of him so highly and having him here is a real boost.
“We’ve got a player of real calibre who was playing in the Premier League four months ago, and I think this is a fantastic signing for us.
“I’m looking forward to working with Fred differently because he was a teammate of mine.
“I enjoyed having him as a teammate and look forward to working with him again.”
