Wycombe Wanderers’ home EFL Cup match against Aston Villa is on course to be a sell-out.
At the time of writing, less than 700 tickets are remaining for the third round encounter at Adams Park on September 24.
The clash with the Champions League side has already attracted the second-highest attendance ever for a League Cup fixture at the stadium, surpassed only by the semi-final tie against Chelsea in January 2007.
The club have reported ticket sales of more than 7,500, although restrictions are in place which require ticket buyers to have held an account on the club’s system prior to the third round draw being made, to prevent away supporters from purchasing in home sections of Adams Park.
Going into the contest, Matt Bloomfield’s side are unbeaten in their last six matches and are hoping to defeat Unai Emery’s Villa for the first time in a competitive fixture.
The previous two encounters in this competition have ended with an aggregate score of 13-3 to the Midlands team (5-0 in September 2003 and 8-3 in September 2005, both of which were played at Adams Park).
However, when the two teams last met nearly a decade ago in the FA Cup, Wanderers managed to secure a 1-1 draw at HP12 to take the tie to a replay at Villa Park.
And despite Villa being in the Premier League (albeit, they were bottom), and with Wycombe being in League Two, two late goals in the final 15 minutes knocked the Chairboys out of the competition.
The match kicks-off at 8pm and is live on Sky Sports.
