Wycombe Wanderers head coach Michael Duff admitted his team ‘cannot get used to playing at 2-0 down’ following their 2-1 loss at AFC Wimbledon.
Goals inside the opening 32 minutes from Omar Bugiel and Steve Seddon put the Dons in a commanding lead as the Chairboys lacked any threat in the opening 45 minutes.
They finished the half with no shots on target and despite keeping with the same starting 11 from last week, when Wanderers beat Northampton Town 2-0 at Adams Park, the Buckinghamshire outfit looked flat, tired and careless.
Multiple passes went astray, players were going for the same ball, and there seemed to be no communication at the back.
Wycombe improved in the second period as Ewan Henderson’s first goal for Wanderers gave them hope, but the day belonged to the Dons.
The result means the Chairboys have only won one of their last 14 against Wimbledon in the league, losing seven and drawing six.
Speaking at full-time, Duff said: “The first 35 minutes were nowhere near the level to win any game of football.
“We were lucky not to be 4-0 down as we had to change the shape after 32 minutes, which is something I don’t like doing.
“The first goal is from a set play, so we need to be better with them.
“The second, people were in the wrong positions with the ball, and they had more hunger and desire.
“We rejigged a few things at the break, so there is a positive as they reacted and showed spirit, but we can’t be getting used to playing at 2-0 down as that’s easy.
“That can’t happen.
“That is something I told them before the game, as I said I would learn a lot about them, and I didn’t like what I saw.”
In the 14 competitive games Wycombe have had this season, it was the fourth time the Chairboys found themselves two goals down, only to lose 2-1.
The previous occasions occurred against Bradford City, Stockport County and Peterborough United, respectively.
Duff continued: “We had 69 per cent possession, but it was in our half – it is pointless possession.
“Don’t have possession for the sake of having it.
“That [the loss] has to be a warning shot as we have quality and we showed that quality in the second half – we dominated, we showed that fighting spirit and we kept going.
“But it is the mentality – playing 2-0 down football is dangerous as you have nothing to lose.
“Good teams don’t do that as you need to show that fight and desire at 0-0, and to be fair, they did show that.”
