The seven new teams for the 2026/27 season have been confirmed.
Following Notts County’s resounding 3-0 victory against Salford City in the League Two play-off final on Bank Holiday Monday, all of the sides for the following campaign in the third tier have been established.
Dropping down from the Championship are Leicester City, Oxford United and Sheffield Wednesday, while coming up from League Two are Bromley, Milton Keynes, Cambridge United, and Notts County.
So here is a reminder of when Wycombe Wanderers last played each of these seven teams in a competitive manner.
Leicester City
Season: 2013/14
Date: August 6, 2013
Result: Wycombe Wanderers 1-2 Leicester City
Competition: League Cup
The 2026/27 season will be the first in English football history which will Wycombe take on Leicester in a league fixture.
For the Foxes, it is a huge from fall grace following their Premier League title win 10 years ago, while for the Chairboys, it will be their sixth straight year in League One.
At the time of writing, Wanderers and City have only met each other on two occasions.
The first was THAT FA Cup quarter-final fixture at Filbert Street, when TeleText signing Roy Essandoh scored an injury-time winner to send the Chairboys into the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners, Liverpool.
However, the least mention match in August 2013 in the League Cup, which saw the Foxes win 1-2 at Adams Park was the last time these two teams met.
Leicester, then of the Championship, ended that season with a promotion to the Premier League, while Wycombe avoided relegation to the National League on the final day.
Oxford United
Season: 2023/24
Date: February 17, 2024
Result: Wycombe Wanderers 0-0 Oxford
Competition: League One
The last time Wanderers took on their M40 rivals in Oxford, the Kassam Stadium team ended the year with promotion to the Championship.
On their way on going up, they got two points off Wycombe that season.
The first was a thrilling 2-2 draw in Oxfordshire, a game which resulted in three penalties, but the second was not as exciting as it ended goalless in Buckinghamshire.
However, for this fixture, Wycombe changed the name of their stadium from Adams Park to Adam’s Park, in honour of Adam Ankers – a Wanderers youth player who died earlier that month from a cardiac arrest when playing for the club.
Sheffield Wednesday
Season: 2022/23
Date: January 13, 2023
Result: Wycombe Wanderers 0-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Competition: League One
In one of Gareth Ainsworth’s last games in charge of Wycombe, the Owls won the fixture thanks to an incredible strike from Will Vaulks, who fired home the winner early in the first-half from around 35-yards.
For Wednesday, the result was the 14th of what was a 23-game unbeaten run in the league, in what was Wycombe’s highest-attended home match of the season.
Wednesday would end the year with promotion to the Championship.
Bromley
Season: 2025/26
Date: August 26, 2026
Result: Bromley 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers (Wycombe win 5-4 on penalties)
Competition: League Cup
A regular fixture in both of the club’s Non League days, the last encounter between the two came nearly 12 months ago in the League Cup.
Wanderers took the lead through a Magnus Westergaard header just five minutes in, before Jude Arthurs equalised 10 minutes before the break.
The tie went to penalties and after Byron Webster missed the deciding kick which would sent Bromley through, Wycombe recovered which saw 16-year-old Camerson Stones fire home the winning spot-kick.
Milton Keynes
Season: 2023/24
Date: August 8, 2023
Result: Milton Keynes 0-2 Wycombe Wanderers
Competition: League Cup
Second-half strikes from Brandon Hanlan and Chris Forino saw the South Buckinghamshire side defeat their Buckinghamshire rivals north of the county in the first round of the League Cup.
It was 11th meeting between the two teams since 2019.
Cambridge United
Season: 2024/25
Date: February 1, 2025
Result: Cambridge United 1-1 Wycombe
Competition: League One
One day before Wycombe appointed Mike Dodds as their head coach following Matt Bloomfield’s shock exit to Luton a few weeks before, the Chairboys travelled to struggling Cambridge.
Wanderers took the lead through Cameron Humphreys but after Sonny Bradley was sent off incorrectly midway through the second half, the game turned on its head as Josh Stokes equalised for the Us with seven minutes left.
Wycombe missed out on promotion after losing to Charlton in the play-offs, while Cambridge were relegated.
Notts County
Season: 2017/18
Date: March 30, 2018
Result: Notts County 0-0 Wycombe Wanderers
Competition: League Two
The last time Wycombe played Notts County in any capacity was on Good Friday, 2018, which ended goalless.
However, the point proved pivotal as Wycombe secured automatic promotion that season.
