Wycombe Wanderers surrendered a two-goal lead before battling back to earn a dramatic 3-3 draw against Buckinghamshire rivals MK Dons in an extraordinary derby at Adams Park.

In the first league meeting between the two sides at HP12 for more than three years, it was Wycombe who dominated the opening 45 minutes.

Ewan Henderson forced Craig MacGillivray into an early save after five minutes before Dan Casey's long-range effort was deflected wide moments later.

The front four of Malik Mothersille, Fred Onyedinma, Cauley Woodrow and debutant Jayden Wareham caused MK all sorts of problems, stretching the visitors' defence and creating space throughout the first half.

Their bright start was rewarded after 10 minutes when Caolan Boyd-Munce's corner was powered home by Casey with a towering header.

It was the perfect beginning for Michael Duff's side, who entered the derby searching for a first win after six matches without victory.

Wycombe's confidence continued to grow, with record signing Wareham proving a constant threat around the penalty area. His best opportunity arrived shortly after the opener when he spotted MacGillivray off his line, but his ambitious lob drifted narrowly wide.

The Chairboys doubled their lead on the half-hour mark. MK failed to clear their lines and Henderson was on hand to fire a first-time strike beyond MacGillivray from distance for his second goal of the season.

The visitors' goalkeeper may feel he could have done better, while Wycombe could easily have added a third before the break as Mothersille, Casey and Woodrow all went close.

MK's best opportunities of the first half fell to Sam Nombe, who first dragged a good chance wide before being denied by Conor Hazard.

The game turned dramatically after the interval as Wycombe's lead disappeared in just eight minutes.

Aaron Collins sparked the comeback on 50 minutes with a stunning long-range effort that crashed in off the crossbar. Five minutes later, Calum Patterson levelled the scores after Collins squared the ball for the substitute to convert from close range.

MK then completed the turnaround on 58 minutes when Dan Crowley's dangerous delivery was headed beyond Hazard by former Oxford United defender Curtis Nelson.

The turnaround stunned Adams Park, with only the travelling supporters making any noise.

Duff responded by introducing Silko Thomas, and the substitution proved inspired.

With 17 minutes remaining, Thomas delivered a low cross into the box and Wareham was there to poke home his first Wycombe goal and restore parity.

Neither side could find a winner in a breathless finale, with Wareham's strike proving the sixth and final goal of a remarkable afternoon.

The result means both of Buckinghamshire's EFL clubs remain without a League One win this season. For Wycombe, the wait for victory now stretches to seven matches in all competitions.

The Chairboys return to action on September 12 when they travel to Leyton Orient.

Attendance: 5,920 (1,299 away).
