RGS High Wycombe produced an historic 17-16 victory at Colston’s in the U18 Cup fifth round to wreck the Bristol school’s hopes of an eighth Daily Mail title.

The narrow victory was the first time the RGS had beaten them in the Cup and wiped away years of heartache, which included successive defeats in Twickenham finals.

RGS coach Jon Scourfield said: “I was delighted by the way we played.

“The forwards were magnificent. You expect to get bullied when you play Colston’s, but it was the other way around this time.”

RGS took full advantage of Colston having two players sent to the sin-bin to wrap up a momentous win and to claim their place in the sixth round where they will face another long trip west, this time to face either Truro College or Filton College.

The Wycombe-based team had to come from behind though to claim the win.

They trailed to an early penalty before two unconverted tries from left winger Steve Edwards gave them the advantage.

But the Bristolians hit back to lead 16-10 with a Watkins try and two more penalties from the centre.

The RGS refused to buckle though and they reclaimed the lead within five minutes of the restart as centre James Rogers went under the posts before Dan Wood’s boot added the extras.

Colston came on strongly in the closing minutes, but the RGS held firm to take a famous win and book their place in the next round.
