DAVID McCracken says that for once, the players were happy not to have a midweek game in which to bounce back from a defeat on Saturday.

Wycombe’s unbeaten league run came to an end with a 3-2 defeat at Aldershot on Saturday; normally teams are champing at the bit to make amends but the Blues skipper said not this time.

He said: “Having a game on the Tuesday helped us after the FA Cup match [when they lost 2-0 at non-league Eastwood]. It gave us a chance to rectify that straight away.

“But in the past couple of games we’ve had four games straight off, so with a free week we’ll maybe have a bit more time on the training ground and can work on quite a few things to take into the Luton game.”

Not least the defending, which came apart at the seams against Aldershot.

The Blues conceded more goals at the Recreation Ground than in all their previous away fixtures in League Two this season combined.

And three could easily have been four, five or six.

McCracken said: “As a defender, we’ve concentrated on limiting the number of chances teams have against us and I think we’ve done well this season, not just the defence, but as a team we’ve defended well.

“We didn’t do that against Aldershot and I’m sure we’ll be trying to get back to the way we have been defending at training this week.

“We knew it was going to be tough at Aldershot, but we let ourselves down. We didn’t play anywhere near the way we have been.

“We were better in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. We didn’t help ourselves in the first half hour and to lose two early goals leaves you a mountain to climb.

“In the end it proved too much for us.”

McCracken and his team-mates are not panicking though. Blues are still six points clear at the top of League Two and a good festive period, when they play four times, could stretch their lead further.

McCracken said: “It’s good to be at the top of the league, but we know there’s still a lot of games to come, especially over the Christmas period.

“There will be more points dropped and points gained but as long as we are up there at the end of the season that’s the main thing.”
