WYCOMBE Wanderers' proud 21-match unbeaten run came to a dramatic end as Bury snatched two goals in the last three minutes to KO the longest unbeaten record in the country.

John Gorman's previously impregnable league leaders looked set to make it 22 matches without defeat as they led through Kevin Betsy's 21st minute opener with just three minutes of normal time remaining.

But Paul Scott headed in a dramatic 87th minute equaliser and then, in the third minute of injury time, Simon Whaley tucked in Stuart Barlow's low cross to break Wycombe's hearts and end the best unbeaten sequence in the country.

Blues boss Gorman admitted his table toppers got what they deserved as they paid the penalty for relaxing on their half time lead.

He said: "I've got to give credit to Chris Casper and his team for their second half performance. In the first half we were too comfortable and I didn't like it. We were by far the better side and scored a beautiful goal.

"We looked like we were more than one league above them but, credit to them, in the second half they came at us, put us under pressure and kept going right until the 93rd minute and they deserved to win. It's frustrating because we should have won that game by half time.

"Bury didn't get near us in the first half but in the second half they were biting and they were fighting.

"We didn't put our foot on the ball like we had been doing and it hurts because I was very proud of this record."

But while Gorman was bemoaning his side's late collapse he showed his class as he shook hands with all the Bury players as they came off the field to rapturous applause from the Gigg Lane faithful.

Gorman said: "The pressure has been on us in every game because of this record and you could see what it meant to Bury to beat us.

"It is like they have won the cup or the league championship."

And he hopes that losing the record will free his team of the pressure they have been under and enable them to go off on another run.

He said: "It's horrible to lose our record but maybe it will help take some of the pressure off us and we can start again now and get back to winning ways now."

There was no sign of the drama that was to come as Wanderers cruised into an early lead.

Betsy gave the travellers a fully-deserved early advantage with a superb individual goal.

He latched onto Danny Senda's long ball forward, waited for the keeper to commit himself, before dummying the covering defender and chipping the ball into the back of the net from an ever decreasing angle.

With Rob Lee pulling the strings in midfield, Wycombe were totally dominant. They might have doubled their lead soon afterwards but Matt Bloomfield's low effort was well dealt with by keeper Neil Edwards.

But it was a different story after the break. Bury came out all guns blazing while Wycombe seemed content to just soak up the pressure.

Charlie Griffin and Sergio Torres were both forced to give way to injuries and their replacements Russell Martin and Jonny Dixon failed to lift Wycombe as Bury began to dominate.

Talia made a great save to deny Whaley and it looked like Wycombe had weathered the storm when they almost stretched their lead. Betsy led the breakout. He fed Mooney, but the striker saw his venomous shot tipped over by Edwards, even though the referee gave a goal kick.

It was short respite however and Bury set up camp again in Wycombe's half and eventually earned their reward.

Talia produced a double save to scoop out Tom Youngs' cross and then used his knees to deny Paul Scott.

Wycombe scrambled the ball clear for a corner and from the resulting Brian Barry-Murphy flag kick Scott rose highest to nod in the equaliser.

Both sides pushed for a winner but it was Bury who snatched it in the third minute of injury time.

Substitute Barlow found space on the left side of the Wycombe area to pull the ball back for Whaley who couldn't believe his luck as he swept in a dramatic winner.

Gorman said: "Congratulations to Bury they worked their backsides off. To lose one point was bad enough but to lose three and the record in the last seconds was a real choker."
