HARLEQUINS B won the battle of the top teams in Division Four of the Wycombe and District Table Tennis League with a comprehensive 8-2 win over Union Baptist A.

The win leaves Harlequins five points clear at the top of the table but the encounter proved a lot closer than the final scoreline suggests.

Union's David Lord narrowly lost his first two games, all of which could have gone his way on a better day, as Harlequins sailed into a 2-0 lead, courtesy of Roger Spratt and Gabriel Andai. Lord couldn't stop the rot against Cor Broekhoff, despite coming from a set down to take it into a third leg. He lost the decider 21-15.

Andai won his second of the night to make it 4-0, before Lord, fell again, this time to Roger Spratt. Having lost the first leg, Lord came back to win the second but just lost out in the third leg 21-19 and Harlequins were 5-0 up by the half-way stage.

Union's Ernie Barnett and John Sanders lost out in the doubles to Andai and Broekhoff after taking it to a third leg, and Sanders did the same against Broekhoff in the following game.

Barnett and Lord salvaged some pride at the end for Union but Spratt sealed maximum points for Harlequins winning his third of the night against Sanders.
