HIGH Wycombe RFC have dismissed out of hand a suggestion to withdraw from the Bucks Cup to ease their fixture congestion.

The Bucks County RFU emailed the defending county champions with the suggestion when the club was struggling to arrange their semi-final fixture with Milton Keynes.

Wycombe secretary Don Dickerson, who also represents the club on the County board, said: “We were startled.

“Because of the snow and the fixture pile up, they were looking for avenues and because we’re also in the play-offs I think they were wondering if we considered that more important.

“We consider both competitions to be important.

“We have won the Bucks Cup for the past two seasons and last year the guys took it down to the minis on the Sunday after the final and the kids really thought it was fantastic.

“It means a lot to the club.”

Wycombe have finally agreed to play their semi-final at Milton Keynes on Sunday, May 2.

They will go into the game either on the crest of a wave or crestfallen.

Just eight days before that they go to Newton Abbott in a one-off promotion play-off and manager Mike Cussell has told his players that if they want to be involved in the showpiece games at the end of the season then they need to impress him against Bletchley tomorrow.

Cussell said: “The Bletchley game is a dead rubber in terms of the league but it’s important for the players with the play-off game in mind.

“I’ve got a first team squad of players genuinely in contention of about 25 or 26.

“I can only pick a squad of 19 for the play-offs so a few people are going to be disappointed.”
