WANDERERS boss Gary Waddock insists his team can complete the Great Escape after they made it three straight wins by snatching a 95th minute winner over Bucks rivals MK Dons this afternoon.

Kevin Betsy’s dramatic winner, four and a half minutes into stoppage time, earned the Blues a 3-2 victory at the home of their local rivals to move to within five points of safety.

Blues twice led in the game through rejuvenated striker Alex Revell , but on each occasion they were pegged back by Aaron Wilbraham strikes before Betsy settled it right at the death to raise hopes of an Houdini-style escape.

Waddock said: “On the evidence of today we’ve got a fighting chance and if we show that workrate and attitude we’ve got a chance.

“We’ve got three massive cup finals left to try and pull this season around.

“At the moment the players are getting it right and we have to do that for the remaining three fixtures and if we do, it gives us a helluva chance.

“Confidence and belief at this time of the season is key and we’ve got that.”

His team looked doomed to the drop after a pointless Easter cast them nine points adrift, but they have shown promotion form since then as they look to avoid an instant return to League Two.

They have developed a stubborn streak and even when the Dons equalised for a second time on Saturday, Wycombe refused to accept that it wasn’t their day with Betsy producing the winner which will have sent a shiver down the spines of the teams just above Wanderers.

Waddock said: “The lads kept going right to the end and we thoroughly deserved it for the commitment desire and the way we played.”

“The way they kept going says so much about that group of players. To come back from all of that in the position we are in tells you a lot about that group.

“They showed character, desire, a never-say-die attitude and a real want to get out of the situation we are in and on top of that we played some good football.”

And it was fitting that Betsy should come up with the winner.

He should have been dead on his feet after all the effort he had put in but instead he found the energy to get into the box to lash home what could be a priceless goal.

Waddock said: “He was outstanding. He loves this football club and it was nice for him to get the winning goal in the dying seconds of a derby game. And it keeps us fighting away to stay in the division.

“That goal could make a huge difference to us. To come here and win was a big ask and we’ve won three on the trot now.”
