WYCOMBE Wanderers wonderkid Matty Phillips has earned a call-up into the England U19 provisional squad for the European Championships taking place in France later this summer.

Phillips earned his place in the squad after impressing the England coaching staff during an Elite tournament in Ukraine.

Phillips made his debut with a cameo appearance off the bench in a 1-0 win over Ireland and then started and scored in a 4-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzogovina.

Phillips will join up with the squad a week today for a four-day training camp, after which the squad will be trimmed to 18 ahead of the Championships, which take place from July 12 to 31.

Even if he doesn’t make the cut, he will still be on standby.

Phillips’ progress puts Wycombe on the map and will up the ante as big-name clubs circle the Aylesbury-born winger.

Blues boss Gary Waddock said: “I’m delighted for him. He did well in the tournament he was in and he deserves to be there.”

However, with Phillips joining England next week he will miss the start of Wanderers’ pre-season schedule.

Waddock said: “I’m not worried at all. He’ll be training and playing games there so it’s not a concern for us at all.”
