WYCOMBE Wanderers appear to have been thwarted just days before signing long-time target Scott Donnelly.

The Aldershot midfielder was poised to sign for Blues in the early part of this week, but an approach from what he describes as a ‘big club’ means the switch to Adams Park is back on ice.

He said: “It was pretty much done. I was on holiday last week and was probably going to come down and sign for Wanderers when I got back, probably today [Monday].

“But I got a phone call from my agent while I was on holiday telling me about this other club.

“It was a nice surprise and I’ll speak to them this week.”

However, the 22-year-old former U17 England international insists a move to Wanderers is not completely dead in the water.

He said: “I wouldn’t say it’s not been ruled out yet.

“Everything could still fall through. It’s not done at all.”

Donnelly didn’t say which club had made the 11th-hour approach, but he did confirm that they are higher up the pyramid than League Two.

Blues boss Gary Waddock would not comment on Donnelly specifically, but said: “This week will determine what’s happening with one or two players.

“It’s a waiting game at the moment and we just have to be patient and wait for good players.

“Good players attract attention. They will talk to other clubs and weigh up their options and we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Waddock first tried to sign Donnelly in January but the Shots rejected Blues’ offer.

He made another approach in May and Donnelly, who is out of contract this summer and scored 14 times last season, said at the time that a move to Wycombe was imminent.

Speaking to the Midweek at the end of May, Donnelly said: “There are a few other things happening but nothing as attractive as Wycombe.

“Wycombe is my favoured one. Hopefully by the end of the week we might have sealed the deal.”

Blues are also waiting on another midfielder, John Mousinho, but Waddock says there is no rush to finalise his squad.
