BLUES boss Gary Waddock has signed Dave Winfield to reunite the centre back partnership that served him so well at Aldershot Town.

Winfield joins on a two-year deal, just six months after Waddock lured Adam Hinshelwood to Wycombe from The Recreation Ground.

The manager said: “I’ve worked with him before. I know what I’m getting and he was the one I wanted. He’s young and strong, he’s very focused and wants to improve.

“With Luke Oliver going I wanted to bring in another player in that department and he’s a good addition. I wouldn’t have got him otherwise.”

Winfield and Hinshelwood were regulars in the Shots defence in the first half of last season, and the 22-year-old says they clicked on and off the pitch.

He said: “We’re both no-nonsense defenders and gritty characters.

“We had a good understanding from the start, but that comes from our relationship off the pitch.

“When he joined the club [Aldershot] we hit it off immediately and we’ve kept in contact irrespective of what clubs we are playing for.

“On the pitch I think we had a good partnership and I like playing with him.

“If that happened again at Wycombe I’d be more than comfortable with it.”

Hinshelwood hasn’t actually put pen to paper on a new deal at Adams Park yet, but Winfield expects him to stay and Waddock says they just need to find time to thrash out the details.

The manager said: “It’s just a case of getting him in and sitting down with him and having a chat. There is no great urgency.”

With Scott Donnelly opting for Swansea over Wycombe this week and John Mousinho turning down a new contract at Adams Park, Winfield’s arrival is some welcome good news.

He said: “I was out of contract at Aldershot and wasn’t sure what I was going to do. There were a few clubs interested, from Conference level to League One, but I have a good relationship with Gary [Waddock] and when it became clear there was an opportunity at Wycombe I was very interested.

“There are other centre backs at the club and I wouldn’t expect to play if I wasn’t pulling my weight.

“You don’t just join a new club and expect to go straight into the team.

“But I’m very hard working and determined and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure I am starting every week.

“I want to be playing on merit, but I didn’t come here to sit on the bench.”
