NICOLA Sanders has been named in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team to take part in the European championships in Barcelona.

The Amersham 400m runner will compete in the 4x400m relay.

However, she has not been selected to compete in the 400m event despite the absence of Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu through injury.

Instead, Lee McConnell will be the only GB entry in that event after beating Sanders at the European Trials and GB Championships a week ago.

Sanders clocked a season’s best time of 52.70 to finish second, but although it’s an improvement it’s still a long way short of her sub 50 second times of 2007, when she won silver at the World Championships in Osaka.

The European Championships begin on July 27.
