STUART Beavon is determined to win a place in Gary Waddock’s team despite watching out of the treatment room window two players in his position arrive at the club.

Ben Strevens and Scott Rendell have both signed during a summer which Beavon has spent in a cast after fracturing his left fibia in the dying embers of last season, and with Jon-Paul Pittman on the books too Blues have plenty of attacking options.

Beavon said: “Competition is healthy. It brings the best out of players.

“And I’m still here. The gaffer has obviously seen something in me that he likes so hopefully I can get in the team, score some goals and then stay there.”

The striker picked up his current injury playing in a 3-2 defeat to Maidenhead in the Berks and Bucks Cup Final in early May, but there is light at the end of the tunnel now and he hopes the specialist will give him the all-clear on Monday..

He said: “I’ve spent most of the summer in a cast. It came off three weeks ago and I’m slowly easing my way back in.

“I’m getting there. I’m seeing a specialist next week and hopefully he’ll give me the all-clear to start running again.

“I’ve been at the training ground every day, on the bikes and I’ve done loads of swimming, but it’s massively frustrating and I just want to get out there again.”

Wanderers play their first pre-season match next Tuesday at Chesham, when Rendell, Strevens and Jon-Paul Pittman could all get the chance to impress the manager.

Beavon though, is still weeks away from playing, although he is crossing fingers that he’ll be back in time to play some part in pre-season.

He said: “It’s a bad time to be injured, but I hope to be fit for the start of pre-season.

“I’m behind in fitness now, but once I start running again I can make it up and hopefully I’ll get two or three games before the season starts.”

If not, Beavon will have to bide his time.

He said: “This is part and parcel of being a footballer. I’ve had a couple of [groin] operations since I’ve been here and they say things happen in threes, so hopefully this is it and I will have a clear run through the season.”
