WANDERERS boss Gary Waddock has told teenager Kadeem Harris that he wants to see him battling for a first team place this term and that he won’t be sending him out on loan.

The 17-year year-old showed plenty of his potential as a young Blues side beat Burnham 2-1 on Tuesday.

The purple-booted youngster, who has already made two first team appearances last season, was a real handful and Burnham could not brush Wycombe’s box of tricks off the ball.

Harris, who holds the record of being the youngest person to play a league match for the Blues at the age of just 16 years and 201 days when he came on as a sub against Yeovil last Boxing Day, faces hot competition to land a place in the Blues first choice midfield this term.

But Waddock wants him to fight for his chance and says there will be no going out on loan option.

He said: “We’ve assembled a squad and we don’t want to dismantle it straight away.”

Together with new signing Marvin McCoy the pair were Blues’ shining lights against their non league neighbours.

Right back McCoy rampaged forward at every opportunity while midfielder Harris was a menace the Southern League side couldn’t handle.

But it was youngster Lee Weemes and forgotten first team midfielder Stuart Green that got the goals to ensure that Blues got the win despite a spectacular headed own goal from defender Leon Johnson, who came through his first 90 minutes of the pre-season despite suffering an ankle scare.

It was another impressive performance from Waddock’s largely youthful side though and afterwards the watching boss said: “A number of those younger players have already been in the first team group and if they continue developing they are going to push the first team players.

“They train regularly with the first team group and if we can nurture these players over the next few years we will have a real crop of exciting players on our hands.

“The youngsters have already seen Matty Phillips come through and the likes of Matt McClure, Sam Belcher and Jerome Federico have already been involved in the first team this pre-season.”
