WANDERERS boss Gary Waddock has backed his strikers to hit the goal trail ahead of tomorrow’s visit to Accrington Stanley.

The Blues have managed just one goal in their last three outings – and that was a free kick curled in by defender Andy Sandell in last week’s 1-1 draw at Northampton.

But Waddock remains convinced goals are just around the corner for his strikers Ben Strevens, Jon-Paul Pittman, Stuart Beavon and £125,000 summer signing Scott Rendell, while he also has a wildcard, young Matt McClure, up his sleeve.

Blues whacked in 28 goals in a free-scoring pre-season but have found the net tougher to find in League Two.

But Waddock said: “I’m not worried. I’ve got four strikers who are proven at this level, and then young Matt McClure who is doing very well.

“We are creating chances and the goals will come.”

Rendell had his best game yet in a Blue shirt last week but could not top his battling performance with a goal.

But despite the goals drying up, the Blues are unbeaten in League combat this season and their success has been built on their defence.

They have conceded just once, and that was a penalty conceded in the 86th minute of last week’s clash at Northampton.

And Waddock, who is not normally renowned for defending, thinks his miserly rearguard will get even better.

Sandell is still getting his match fitness up to speed after missing all of pre-season with a groin problem, while Leon Johnson has also only just come back in after eight months.

He is deputising for centre half Alan Bennett who is again sidelined with a hamstring pull.

Waddock said: “We’ve kept clean sheets which is great and we can get even better in that area but now we need top get more clinical at the other end and once we click there we will be ok.”

Wanderers will add young striker McClure to their bench at Accrington, with the youth team graduate taking the place of new Blackpool signing Matt Phillips in the party that will head north after training today.

Waddock said: “We won’t let Matty’s [Phillips] departure affect us because we have got a lot of other very good players in this squad.”

Seventh-placed Stanley sit one place ahead of Blues in the table but Waddock is targeting a first away win of the season in this one.

He said: “I don’t go for draws. We try and win wherever we go but it is going to be very tough.

“Accrington have had a very good start to the campaign and it will be a dificult place to go to.”

Tomorrow will be a first real reminder to Blues that they are back are in the basement division again.

They will look out on one stand dwarfed by neat conservatories instead of running out in front of the massive double decker stand at Leeds United as they did last season.

But Waddock says they will not underestimate their opponents, no matter how humble their home is.

Waddock said: “Their manager John Coleman has improved them every year.

“You only have to look at how well Dagenham [similar in size to Accrington] did in winning promotion last year so there is no way we will underestimate them.

“This league is going to be very tight. There are a lot of teams who are going to be competing.”
