THE season starts on Saturday for Beaconsfield SYCOB.

That’s the view of manager Dave Mudge, who has targeted the home game with North Greenford United as one of three must-win fixtures in their final six games.

SYCOB are in action tonight against second-placed Daventry Town but Mudge is expecting the points that will save his rock-bottom side from the drop to come elsewhere.

He said: “The next four or five games is where the season begins. It’s Saturday at home, games with Uxbridge, Marlow and Atherstone, that’s the crux of our season. We need to win three of those games. It’s going to come down to those four or five games and we have to show we want them more than the other teams.

“We’re not scoring enough but someone will get an absolute hammering when one goes in. I can’t fault the application but we’re not having the rub of the green and we’re still looking for that elusive win.

“We have every opportunity to stay up. Most of our games are at home or local against sides with maybe nothing to play for. If we get the attitude right we’ll be OK.”

This week has summed up Beaconsfield’s luck after a 2-1 loss to promotion chasing Biggleswade Town at the weekend and the news Saturday’s opponents North Greenford secured a point against Uxbridge thanks to an injury time goal from their goalkeeper.

Referring to the Biggleswade game Mudge said: “It was as well as I’ve played since I’ve been at the club but our inability to finish has cost us.

“We should have had two penalties for blatant handballs on the goalline but the referee waved them away.

“Their chairman and manager said we were the best side they’ve seen all season. We should have won 5-1.”

He added: “We’ve come a long way in a short space of time. We’re trying to round what hasn’t been done at that club since last pre-season.

“We’ve conceded four in the last five games, which says an awful lot for us.”
