WASPS director of rugby Leon Holden has at least three players in mind for promotion to the first team after the A’s thrashed Gloucester 34-3 on Monday evening.

Wasps ran in five tries against the Cherry and Whites and with Holden admitting that the first team ‘can’t buy a try at the moment’, he plans to shake things up a bit for Sunday’s trip to London Irish.

Charlie Beech ploughed over for the first try after good work from Christian Wade and Joe Launchbury, and Wade himself finished off try number two after a dazzling attack started by the determination of Joe Burton.

A 50m surge from winger Steve Hamilton led to the third try, scored by centre Will Greenwood, before Burton added two more scores after the break – the last following a 40m dash to the line that left the Gloucester defence in his wake.

The match was also significant for the contribution of former Ireland U20 fly half Andrew Burke, who added nine points with the boot.

The victory, which followed 39-29 and 55-0 defeats to Saracens and Exeter earlier in the year, backed up Holden’s decision to recall loan players and field far stronger A teams.

He said: “In the past, when the first team won on a Sunday and the A team won on a Monday, the pressure is back on the first team come Tuesday for position.

“If the first team lost and the second team won it was even more. That helped, that definitely helped.”
