WASPS have parted company with head coach Shaun Edwards.

Edwards, who is just back from coaching Wales to the World Cup semi-final, has been at Wasps for more than ten years but hinted last week his time with the Wycombe club could be at an end.

Wasps have not confirmed the departure yet, but they are expected to make a statement later today.

While Edwards was on Wales duty Wasps appointed Dai Young as director of rugby, filling the vacancy left by Tony Hanks' exit in February.

Paul Turner also arrived as attack coach. Rob Hoadley and Trevor Woodman are also on the coaching staff and it has been reported that Edwards' departure is part of a cost-cutting exercise by the club.

Before leaving New Zealand, Edwards said: "I'll make a statement when it all comes out properly but the club is in financial difficulties and maybe it is time for me to go on to other challenges."

However, losing a coach of Edwards' quality - when he still had two years left on his contract - can only weaken the club at a time when owner Steve Hayes is looking to sell.

Edwards helped the black and golds to four Premiership titles, two Heineken Cups plus the Parker Pen and Powergen Cups.

England might be alerted though. Edwards had previously been offered a role with the Saxons, which could have been seen as a slap in the face for a man with his reputation. However, if England decide to shake-up their coaching set-up Edwards could be high up in their thoughts.
