BLUES boss Gary Waddock believes Kevin Betsy is still good enough to play in League One despite the winger being released this week.

Betsy's third spell at Adams Park finished on Tuesday after a mutual agreement between club and player to end his contract.

The 33-year-old has departed the club due to a lack of first-team opportunities this season after the emergence of youngster Kadeem Harris and the form of Anthony McNamee and Joel Grant.

Waddock said: "He's got the ability. He's a good footballer and always has been, and he showed that throughout his career. I'm sure someone will pick up a very good player.

"He's been excellent for this football club over the period of time he's been here. He's done very well for me since I've been at the club and I'd like to wish him all the very best."

Betsy scored 25 goals in 185 appearances but only played in three League One matches this season.

Waddock said: "He's been unfortunate he's not played as much as he would like to. Someone like Bets needs to be playing regularly and unfortunately he wasn't getting the games he wanted.

"Anybody who's not playing wants to play and he needs to be playing football."

The Blues boss added Betsy's attitude had been spot on despite finding himself on the sidelines for long periods of this campaign, having made his last appearance in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat against Cheltenham in early October.

He said: "I've got no problems with Kevin Betsy at all. He's a model pro, he does his work, he gets on with it. Unfortunately for him he didn't get in the team - I've got a number of options there [on the wing]."
