The odds on Theresa May becoming the next prime minister have been slashed after she emerged as the public’s preferred choice over Boris Johnson.

The Maidenhead MP, whose constituency covers Cookham and Bisham, narrowly beat the former London Mayor in a YouGov poll taken since David Cameron’s resignation last week.

The pro-EU Home Secretary received 19 per cent of the vote, while Boris was backed by 18.

Michael Gove came a distant third with five per cent, followed by George Osborne, who has already distanced himself from a leadership bid.

The majority of those polled said Mr Cameron was right to resign after the EU referendum result was announced, having campaigned for the UK to remain.
